Candy Corn

Picture
I woke up the next morning to Nathaniel hitting me with his stuffed dog.
“mama, mama, haween!” He shouted over and over
It was hard to be upset that it was almost ten and I had overslept when I saw what I was waking up too. I sat up and looked at Nathan.
“I know, sweetie. You know what happens on Halloween?” I asked him.
“No” he looked confused.
“The mama monster gets Nathan.” I said and rolled off the couch and started to crawl behind Nathan as he took off running and screaming.
“Dada, monser” He screamed and laughed when I finally caught hold of him.
“Good morning.” Justin said looking upset.
Good I thought. He deserves to feel like a dick because that is what he is. I hope he feels as low as he had me feeling last night.
“Good morning” I said back, “It won’t be long until I have to go get the Halloween candy and vickki and Dalton to go trick or treating, you want to ride?”
“No I’ll stay here and watch Nathan.” Justin finally said back.
“If you think you can handle him, he’s mommy’s monster”, I said making a fist at Nathan who made one back with a smile.
“I think we’ll be okay here with out you, you look like you need a little me time anyway.” He replied
“Okay, Thanks.” I said with a kiss and I was off. Once in the room to get dressed I felt horrible for thinking about Justin the way I had. Even though he might have deserved it, didn’t make it okay for me just to be a bitch inside my head.
On the way to my mom’s, I took the normal back roads, the ones that I always took. It made it feel like I was coming home after school. Everything was like that, except the car seat in the in back. I figured sense I had the food stamp card I would pick up the kids first then take them with me and have them help me pick out the candy. Jana said that there wasn’t very many trick or treaters that came down the road we lived on and we both agreed that we would split it evenly between everybody. Including the kids.
It took exactly thirty minutes to get to mom’s if you go the speed limit but I never do, so I got the in about 15. I hadn’t called to tell them I was coming because if I would have mom would have timed me and I would have caught serious hell over how fast I drove and she wouldn’t let the kids come with me. As I pulled into the driveway I honked and out ran two screaming children. They seemed to excited.
“Ali, help me do my hair.” Vikki said.
“Ali, did you get my costume?” Dalton asked.
“Yes and yes. Bub how would you like to be a ninja?” I asked
“Boy would I” he yelled running back inside while me and Vikki followed behind him.
Once I got Vikki to grab her costume so I could see what to do with her hair. She was going to be a renascence princess so I figured braid. I got it half way braided I had us move to the porch, so that me and mom could smoke while we braided and talked. I had no curfew to be home, just as long as there was enough time to get Nathan and the kids ready we were fine.
I hung out with mom until three joking around and having a great time. But I had to get home. Mom walked us to the car and told me to drive safe, Vikki crawled into the front and buckled in and Dalton followed in the back. My brother and sister weren’t stupid by any means they knew what it was like to ride with me, they stayed prepared.
“Drive safe.” mom said
“I will I said” and with that she started walking towards the porch.
“Ready guys.” I asked
“Spin the tires ali.” Dalton said
“Your wish is my command” I said with a smile and we took off like a bat out of hell tires spinning and slinging gravel. Mom’s face was priceless. God, I was so glad that I left my cell phone with Justin who would just laugh it off.
We road to the Bi Lo Listening to Disturbia by Rihanna. I caught myself and Vikki singing louder than the radio at parts of the song and Bob singing the only part he knew. When we pulled up to the store, bub was more than excited to get inside to pick out the candy.
“Ali, Can we get whatever we want?” He asked
“As long as it doesn’t cost a million dollars and Nathan can eat it too.” I said.
“Sweet.” Dalton yelled, jumping out of my station wagon.
Once inside we loaded a basket full of sweet tarts, Reese’s cups, Twix and snicker’s. We had to circle the candy isle twice because there was just so much to choose from. Once we were stocked up and waiting in line. Dalton decided he was thirsty so I bought us all a Coke. Back in the car there was a fight because Vikki and Dalton wanted to tear into the candy before we even got to the house.
“You two need to stop before I take you home.” I said after the fought for 3 minutes straight.
“Are we there yet?” Dalton asked.
“Seriously bub?” I asked with a laugh.
Once onto the back roads we were flying again. I hadn’t realized that it was four already. We made it to the house in record time for me. Which made me feel great. I stole my parking spot next to the house and inside we went.
“Dalton Vikki” Jana and Wayne said in unison. They seemed really excited to see them.
“ Dalton, Come with me. I got your costume in the room.” Jana said/
“Where is Aaron?” Dalton asked following her down the hall.
“Changing into his.” Jana said.
Their voices faded as the door shut.
“Come on Vikki, Lets get changed.” I said picking up Nathaniel and heading toward the room.
“Is Justin going?” Vikki asked.
“I’m not sure.” I said zipping up Nathan’s cow costume.
“I hope he does.” She said. “ I want to make fun of him because he can’t walk.”
“Now, Victoria, that is mean.” I said.
“Yeah” she said, smiling. “He knows I love him.”
Once all changed we went into the living room to get pictures made that way mom could see. It seemed like it took forever because we couldn’t get the kids to hold still. Once we got a good one. We were off.
We stopped at a church so that the kids could do what was called a trunk or treat, it is where they had displays in the trunks of their cars and they let you play games and gave out candy, compliments of the church. Nathaniel had more fun than any of them.
“Oh, he’s precious.”
“Look at the cow, he’s adorable.”
“High five little man.” is all we heard. People really seemed to like Nathan for some reason. I guess he just made that impression on people because even to this day the child is still like that. When it came time for the actual trick or treating Nathan was passed out and it was just Vikki and Dalton who were getting candy. They would run up to a house and as soon as they got their candy run back to the van ready for the next house. We did this until it was dark.
On the way back to our house to divvy out the candy I had bought Dalton had passed out. Not for long though because I planned on sending him home so hyped up on sugar that he wouldn’t sleep for a week, after all what are sister’s for. We got to the house and everybody was instantly awake, and jumping out of Jana’s van to get inside to get the rest of the candy. They fought and fought and we just sat and let them. Finally Jana stepped in and did the one for you one for me thing and it was all settled. Each of the kids had a pillow case full of candy. It was unbelievable. After the candy was sorted Jana took Dalton and Vikki home and I went to bathing Nathaniel.
“Your brother and sister loved tonight.” I was leaning over Nathan with a wash cloth.
“I know Justin.” I said. Kind of annoyed that he was even in the bathroom with me while I was giving Nathan a bath.
“I have to go to the bathroom. I’m sorry if I’m bothering you.” He said.
“Your not, it’s fine. Besides Nathan is already done.” I said wrapping Nathaniel into a towel. “I’m going to put him down for bed. Then I am going to bed. Are you coming?” I asked
“I’ll be in there as soon as I am done.” he said,
With that I walked out of the bathroom and into the room. I lotioned and dried and baby powdered Nathan and grabbed his favorite book, Are you my mother by dr Seuss. And I read until we bother were on the verge of passing out. I held Nathan to my chest while I walked him to the crib to lay him down. I loved that little boy so much that words could not even describe. I watched as he drifted off into sleep. It was just him and me. The way things should be. No fighting no nothing. Just the love between a mother and son.
